kusala citta
Wholesome consciousness
[ KOO-sa-la CHIT-ta ]
Seeing it in life
Wholesome cittas of the sense-sphere, fine-material, immaterial, and supramundane planes. They produce wholesome kamma and pleasant or liberating results.
In short
Cittas rooted in non-greed, non-hatred, and (often) wisdom.
The analysis
Wholesome cittas span four planes: eight in the sense-sphere (rooted in alobha and adosa, sometimes joined by paññā), plus further wholesome cittas at the fine-material, immaterial, and supramundane levels. Sense-sphere kusala cittas are the ordinary wholesome moments of daily life — generosity, kindness, understanding — while the higher-plane wholesome cittas belong to jhāna attainment and path-moments.
Where it sits
Kusala-citta is rooted in alobha and adosa at minimum, sometimes joined by amoha (paññā) for the more complete forms. Whether a wholesome act is accompanied by wisdom or not is itself a further classification the Abhidhamma tracks.
Choosing to pause before replying to a frustrating message, out of genuine consideration rather than mere restraint, is a kusala citta doing its ordinary work — not a special achievement, just non-greed and non-hatred, briefly in charge.
Commonly mistaken for
Only grand or visible good deeds. Wholesome cittas arise in small, unremarkable moments far more often than dramatic ones.
A fixed trait ('a good person'). Like their unwholesome counterparts, kusala cittas arise and pass with specific conditions, not as a stable identity.
