Seeing it in life
Paññā penetrates the three characteristics — impermanence, suffering, not-self — and is identical with amoha (non-delusion). The faculty that uproots all defilements.

The analysis
Paññā is insight into things as they actually are — specifically, penetration of the three characteristics rather than accumulated information or cleverness. It's functionally identical to amoha, non-delusion, the third wholesome root; where moha obscures, paññā sees through. The texts distinguish several levels — wisdom born of hearing, of thinking, and of direct meditative development — with only the third considered capable of uprooting defilements permanently, since the first two remain conceptual.
Where it sits
Paññā is the fifth spiritual faculty, positioned as the culmination the other four support: saddhā provides the confidence to begin, viriya the energy to sustain, sati the presence to stay accurate, samādhi the stability to see clearly — and paññā is what those conditions make possible. It's also the third and final training alongside sīla and samādhi that structures the entire path.
The specific moment of seeing that a feeling-tone and the money-story built on it are two different events, not one — that discrimination is paññā functioning at a small, ordinary scale, not a rare mystical attainment.
Commonly mistaken for
Intelligence or being well-read. Paññā is a specific penetrative seeing into conditioned experience; a highly informed person can be entirely without it in this technical sense.
A permanent trait once attained. Even at high levels, paññā is exercised moment to moment, arising with specific wholesome cittas, not held as a static possession.
