The analysis
Eight noble persons are traditionally enumerated — one at the path-moment and one at the fruition-moment for each of the four stages: stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner, arahant. Each stage is defined by which fetters have been permanently uprooted: the first three at stream-entry, the coarser sensual desire and ill-will further weakened at once-returning and fully abandoned at non-returning, the remaining five subtler fetters only at arahantship.
Where it sits
Ariya status is conferred by having experienced at least the path-moment of a given stage — the term names a person by their supramundane attainment, not by any conventional marker of religious status.
No everyday analogue applies directly — ariya names a specific attainment defined by which fetters have been permanently uprooted, a structural classification rather than a felt everyday quality.
Commonly mistaken for
A general term for a devout practitioner. It specifically denotes someone who has experienced at least one supramundane path-moment, a defined threshold.
A single undifferentiated category. Eight distinct persons are enumerated, differing by which fetters remain.
